Tonight we decided to try a new local restaurant, Chip's Supper Club, housed in the old Brown's on Richfield Road. It has only been open about a week, and I usually don't like to try out a new restaurant that soon. However, a friend had raved about it, so we thought we'd give it a try.
We were led to a table in the sunken area, which used to house a gas fireplace. Now it's an electric fireplace, akin to watching one of those fireplace dvd's on a tv. No heat, and they didn't even try to camoflauge the electrical supply box, etc. Very tacky! The decorations on one wall were nicely done and also those in the separate bar area. The other walls were poorly decorated with things like a small treble clef in the middle of a large wall.
The menu was comprised mostly of soul food, which was often seafood. Our small salads of iceberg lettuce were served in cereal bowls with accompanying storebought dressings in disposable plastic lidded containers. Corn muffins were brought to the table with the salads, but they were quite dry. My cubed steak was served on a bed of mushy rice (maybe that's "soulfood style"?). The steak appeared to be storebought Swiss steak, but it was tasty. I ordered the fried green beans on the suggestion of the waitress. She brought me regular green beans, saying the others were sold out. (It was only 3:00 and not busy!) I hadn't been offered a different side in advance. The side of macaroni was thick with cheese and good. I thought this meal was overpriced at $13.99. Would've been substantially cheaper at Classic Coney Island and a better meal all-around! Gary's ribs were good, almost as good as Uno. He ordered okra, which appeared to have come from a package, breaded and deep-fried. His meal was $17.99 for a full slab, and he was able to bring some of the ribs home.
The manager did come to our table after our meal, and we relayed to her our likes and dislikes.
All in all, we were not impressed. We don't plan to return, as the only thing worth returning for was the ribs, and Uno would serve a better meal, with well-thought-out sides and in a restaurant with a cozier ambience.
