New Year's Eve, 2010

Didn't do much today, a little cleaning, a little bill paying.  Gary ate out all three meals.  Breakfast at Sweet Charlie's with Fred (blueberry pancakes), lunch with Keith at a Chinese BUFFET (!), and pizza at Twin's.  He has decided to attempt beef rouladen for New Year's dinner and invite the Edgcombes and the Rodmans.  Gary always makes our New Year's dinner.

Thursday Night, December 30, 2010

Today we ate at da Edoardo's on Holly Road, east of I-75, the blue buildings housing Big Apple Bagels and Dr. Silverton's office.  I had a coupon to use, which provided for $10 off a $20 or more lunch.

Our waiter never cracked a smile during our entire stay.  We soon learned that after every time we saw him, it would be a long wait before he returned, although the restaurant had few customers, and he appeared to only be waiting on our table.  Eventually he returned after taking our drink orders ($3 for a Diet Coke).  Then there was another long wait before our bread basket arrived, along with icy cold butter.  Gary ordered char-grilled tuna from the lunch menu.  It came with a small side of pasta with an unremarkable tomato sauce. That was $15.95, and he added a side salad, which should have been $2.60.  He ordered it with bleu cheese dressing, but did not request the added bleu cheese crumbles. That was how it was served anyways, making the salad $4.00, for a $20 lunch for him with water as his beverage.  I ordered the Chicken Milanese salad, substituting bleu cheese dressing for the vinaigrette.  Again, bleu cheese crumbles were added, which I believe added $2.00 to my order. Two breaded chicken breasts were under the salad, but there seemed to be no seasonings in the breading.  Neither of our meals were flavorful.

No drink refills were offered by our waiter.  The bill came to $36.99, with an 18% gratuity added in and our $10 coupon being deducted.  Imagine paying $47.00 for lunch for two with only one beverage!  On the good side, I did take home a third of my salad.  I do enjoy the view there, even though it is basically a swamp.  We watched a muskrat poking his head out of one spot of open water and then another.  A pheasant was strutting across the ice for a drink, too.

So-o-o-o-o, our bill came to $36.99 as I stated and, out of my $40, change was brought in the amount of $3.00! I was shorted one cent! I really don't think it is up to the waiter or the restaurant to decide whether I get my penny or not!  As we left our table, I noticed that other diners had received seasoned olive oil for dipping their bread and I remembered that we had gotten that the other time we were there. It was not offered this time.

Then I went in the bathroom on the way out.  Out of three stalls, stall one had no toilet paper and stall two had very little.  I guess I should've checked stall three out of curiosity.  A jug of liquid soap was on the counter, as if someone was waiting for the dispenser to run out before refilling it.  The wastebasket was overflowing all over the floor. This was definitely not what you'd expect in the restroom of an upscale restaurant.  Roadside rest areas are better kept! Generally, I make it a point to tell the staff of a restaurant or a store if the bathroom isn't clean, etc., but no one could be found to tell, so I left and am now telling the world.

So that will be the last time we dine at da Edoardo's.

Ate at Sweet Charlie's in Clio at noon.  Gary enjoyed his crispy hash with two sunny-side up eggs on top and rye toast (thin) on the side ($3.50).  I had the turkey club sandwich, served with potato chips and a pickle for $4.75. We split a dense caramel pecan brownie (only $1.50!). Everything is reasonable and tasty. The decor is well-planned.  When we were there at noon, business was steady with most booths taken. Right now they're open every day until 3:00 (closed Sundays). After the first of the year, they plan to be open until 8:00 on Thursdays and Fridays (fish fry).  I will write a review soon for the Journal.

Gary loves this hash!

Church again.  Amanda sang O Come All Ye Faithful.  Very nice.

Our family Christmas party was tonight at my mom's apartment community room.  Two families didn't come because of sickness that they didn't want to expose Grandma to.  The grandkids all had a great time playing together.  Amanda sang O Holy Night with Heather (quietly) in the foyer.

The cousins enjoyed each other's company!

Christmas Day, 2010

Christmas breakfast guests began arriving at 10:00 a.m. We had cinnamon raisin French toast and blueberry crumble French toast, Canadian bacon (Gracie called them Canadian steaks), and peaches with golden raisins.  Amanda and Laura's families were with us.

Christmas Eve, 2010

Finished up my Christmas shopping today. Planned on having a day and a half to do that, but lost yesterday.  There were virtually no shoppers at the outlets in Birch Run.  I got the closest parking spots and no lines!  Ate at Twin's and had pizza.  Spent the evening getting ready for Christmas breakfast.  We decided to open our presents.  Gary got me a purple sweater, longish with a tie belt.  Also a necklace that looks good with it.  I think the sweater will go nicely with my grey pants.  I also got 2 pair of pj's.  I got Gary a remote-control helicopter and slippers.

The Christmas Eve service was at 11:00 and Amanda came with Emily only, and sang Mary Did You Know.

Thursday, December 23, 2010

Ate at Lucky's in Davison.  Monterey chicken for me and prime rib for Gary, as usual!

December 22, 2010

Got out of work/school at 11:00 today.  I love my job, but was glad to be out to get ready for Christmas!

Sunday, December 19, 2010

Today we went to Holiday Pops at Whiting Auditorium. Such a fun, festive event! It featured the Flint Symphony and more.  My favorite part was the gospel Christmas segment with the Flint Jubilee Singers.

Friday, December 17, 2010

Tonight was the party at Joe's amazing house on a lake in Fenton. Not many people came, but that was OK.  We snacked on finger foods.  Gary made hummus and brought chips.  I was introduced to Apples to Apples, a fun game for all ages that takes no skill!  My kind of game!  Enjoyed the night with friends.

Thursday, December 16, 2010

Amanda & the kiddos were at my house when I got home from school.  When they left, we went to the funeral home for the mom of a couple students.  It was packed, so we left shortly thereafter.

We ate at Sorrento's.  I don't think I've ever been there.  It is near the funeral home on Pierson Road towards Flushing.  The decorations were amazing!  All red and gold for Christmas.  The food was just typical Italian, which I'm not real big on.  I quit eating pasta when I lost my 43 pounds and never regained a taste for it.  I wish I could say the same for desserts.  I liked that the owner was always visible and spoke to patrons.  In fact, we had a conversation with him about the previous location and the decorations.

Then we ran in Aldi's.  Gary plans to make cookies for Joe's party tomorrow night.  We had a choice of two parties, and that one won out because we will know everyone there.  At the other party, we would only know the host.

Honey Bear the clown died today after a too-long bout of Alzheimer's.  An old family friend.  I wonder what the arrangements will be?

Wednesday, December 15,2010

Back to school after the weekend and two snow days (more like ice days).  I had to be there early for a staff meeting.

Wore my yellowish-gold argyle sweater for the first time this year and got lots of compliments. I guess I should've been wearing it all along.

So sleepy after school.  Went to Tom's Classic Coney Island for dinner, about $9.00.  We each had a hamburger.  Mine was a bacon cheeseburger.  I got pop and Gary just had water with lemon.  When you consider that to have that meal at home we would have had to buy tomatoes, lettuce, bacon and onions in addition to the hamburger and buns, the price wasn't that bad.

Genesee Road was finally clear tonight.  Better get away from here and get ready for school/work and get to bed and sleep before Stray Black Kitty decides to harrass me in the night by getting in my face.

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

Another snow day! Roads are STILL icy! I couldn't stay home a day longer, though, so I went to the new Dollar Tree in Clio.  Hadn't been there yet, and I needed a few gift wrapping items.  Took me forever to get there!

Laura sent some noodles with chicken home with Gary.  I didn't realize there was chicken in it, so I made strip steak with onions to go with it.  Also broccoli with cheese sauce.  She also sent home some chocolate chip bar cookies, and I just ate the last one.

I did go to ma's tonight.  The roads looked the same as they have for the last three days, but tonight I think they might have been sanded or something and they were better.  School tomorrow?  Probably.

Monday, December 13, 2010

Snow day today, due to icy roads.  Cleaned off my desk.  Well, kinda. Ma called and suggested I not come. I'm glad she called me before I called her!

Didn't leave the house today. What a waste of eye make-up!

Sunday, December 12, 2010

Weather was bad when we went to church, and the roads were terrible.  We didn't get all the snow that was expected, but it was blowing and snowing all day.  No school tomorrow!!!  Our school was the least in our area to call in.

We went to K-Mart after church, because I wanted to find slippers for ma, and they did have them.  She just likes thin-soled ones, and most now are cushy.  It makes sense that she wants something that gives her close contact to the floor for surer footing.  They we ate at Arby's.  I wanted to go there and check out the glasses they had.  They were NOT holiday ones, and WERE ugly!  Gary had a chicken sandwich and I had a regular Arby's for the calorie-saving benefits.  Then we went to WalMart to find boots for Clark.  Their boots were $5 cheaper than K-Mart.  He wanted boots, and Gracie told him to tell Papa, because Papa bought hers last year.  I don't know how she remembers everything that happened when she was two!

Stayed in out of the weather all afternoon and made an alfredo pasta with sundried tomatoes and parmesan on top.  Also made hot Italian sausage, but didn't add it to the pasta, as I didn't want to change the pasta's intended flavor.

So blustery that I decided not to go to ma's.  The snow feels like needles hitting your face.

Stray Black Kitty has not shown his face at our house since I let him out last evening.  I hope he is in a safe, warm place.  I've actually been checking at the front and back doors very often, sometimes every 10 minutes!  Usually when he disappears like that, he comes home as soon as it's dark, but not tonight.  He's staying out of the weather someplace.

Yay for the snow day tomorrow!

Saturday, December 11, 2010

Today I decided at the last minute not to go to Penney's.  My order isn't in yet, so maybe I'll just wait until Saturday.  I also have a $10 jcp rewards certificate and a $15 certificate!  I did go to Kohl's.  Got my co-worker, Laura's, Christmas presents.  I also got Layna something.  She's not too picky, but I stress out over getting her something really wonderful!

We went to Genesee Church's barbeque dinner tonight.  The Rodmans, minus Doug, were there.

Friday, December 10, 2010

Friday is finally here!  Payday as well! Longevity added into the check for a nice bonus of $350.

Today I had two senior edp groups.  It's a good thing they like me, and I like them, because they can drive me NUTS!  "But it says I'm already 100% done!" "That doesn't mean you don't have to update your goals and career planning activities!"        "But why do I have to update my Matchmaker questions?" "Because you're not the same person you were in 8th grade!"

Of course, we ate at Twin's tonight.  We ordered a large Greek grinder.  It was good, but not the best I've had there.  I guess it could've used more feta, and I think they are making some of their things at too high of a temperature.  Overdone and crusty on the outside.

I managed to stay awake throughout What Not To Wear tonight.

Thursday Night, "Z Night", December 9, 2010

It really worked out well that on "Z Night" we had a county-wide school board dinner to attend at Zehnder's!  I just don't like Zehnder's as well as I do the Bavarian Inn across the road from it.  Zehnder's is usually OK, except that I don't like their dressing.  The texture is as if it has been put in a food processor.  Tonight the service was unbelievably slow!  It seemed like they only had half the waitstaff there, and they were all moving slowly.  Just being in Frankenmuth at Christmas time is always nice, though.  Jeff and Pat and Fred all rode with us.

Sunday, December 5, 2010

Laura and the boys came to church today, and that was nice.  Amanda & her kidlets were quite late.  Afterwards we all went to McDonald's for a noisy-good time.  Amanda's kids ('cept for Emmy) stayed at our house while their mom got groceries.  I used the opportunity to zigzag Gracie's new coat which had a tear in the papery-thin material.

I stuffed my comforter into the washing machine, as it had cat hair on it.  Now I'm going to fold a fleece throw and put it across the foot where the cats lie.  Easier to wash than the comforter.

We had a quick dinner at Rally's , 2 for $4.  Gary had the Philly steak sandwich and I had a chicken club, which had plenty of crispy bacon.  Both were delicious and flavorful.  Gary grabbed two fountain pops at Speedway when he got gas, and that saved a little, as Rally's pops are quite pricy as I remember.

It was snowing hard around Genesee when I left for my mom's.  On the way home it was snowing and sleeting.

Saturday, December 4, 2010

I ran to Penney's this morning and got A.J. a hooded sweatshirt for Christmas.  It was regular $30 and on sale for $9.99, but I had a coupon reducing it to $7.99.  Good deal!

Then I went to Sam's in Grand Blanc and got my mixed nuts and Babybel cheese.  The cheese is about 60 cents each, but after going without for a couple weeks, I realize it's worth it.  After all, you'd pay that much for a candy bar!  I had to renew my $40 membership.  I don't like paying so much for as little as I go there, but what I get is necessary.

Then I went to Big Lots and spent almost $30, which is a lot to me for there.  I spent $11 on two boxes of unique Christmas cards, a doll for Emmy for Christmas (I think it's black, not sure), fall candle rings (about 20 cents each!) that I'd been looking for, and some other odds and ends.

I put my video of Amanda singing O Holy Night to a backdrop of others' Keweenaw photos on Facebook tonight.  I did a very good job making that video!  Then Mary Drew of pastycam saw it and wants to use it on that site Christmas Eve or Christmas Day!  I'm so excited!  People from all over the world look at pastycam every morning.  Charlie is removing it from youtube, so it won't link to there.  Here it is!

Friday, December 3, 2010

Always glad for the weekend!  I need to decorate and organize excess decorations this weekend.  Should find the time to clean off my desk, too.

We met Amanda and the kids at Twin's.  We ordered two chicken strip dinners and probably took half of the chicken home.  Actually, Amanda is taking it for their lunch tomorrow.

My brother was down today, so I thought he'd be with my mom tonight, and I wouldn't have to go.  I called her at 6:30 p.m. and he had left at 4:00.  I didn't go though, because it was so late.  OK with her.

Thursday, December 2, 2010

There are a few Chinese and Japanese in the area that we could have used for "Y Night", but instead we went to Uno's and will probably go to Ya-Ya's a different night, as it is not a Thursday night restaurant.  Too much like fast food.  We had a coupon for Uno's providing for a free entree if we bought something from the new Holiday Menu.  Gary utilized that menu and got the beef short ribs with a side of baked, stuffed potatoes and smashed cauliflower.  He also ordered a side salad.  I don't remember the name of my chicken dish, but it's basically chicken breast rolled around feta, broccoli, tomato and more.  I also had the baked, stuffed potatoes and my dinner came with a side salad.  Everything is always savory-good there.

Wednesday, December 1, 2010

The first day of December has officially arrived.  Tonight was potluck at church, and it was Jean's birthday, so we sang to her.  Lots of good food.  There was practice afterwards for the Christmas program, but I went on to my mother's.

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

Last day of November and rainy to some degree all day long.  It'll be colder tonight and for the near future.

We ate at Senor Lucky's tonight and had one of those multi-tasking waitresses that annoy the heck out of me.  Multi-tasking can be good, but not if it slows down the waitressing.  What I'm referring to are those waitresses who do not refill your pop (for example) unless their other tables' orders are ready to bring out. They don't want to make the trip to your table unless they are also carrying items for at least two more tables.  Tonight the issue was napkins.  I asked if we could have extra napkins, and she said "sure", but first proceeded to clean up three tables and wait in the kitchen for orders she could bring out.  I'm glad nothing was spilled!

My other restaurant peeve is waitresses wearing perfume.  When my food is delivered to the table, I want to smell the food, not the heavy floral perfume of the waitress.  I'd swear I can taste the perfume in my first bite!

Monday, November 29, 2010

Back to work after the four-day Thanksgiving weekend.  The Book Fair was all set up.  I can't see the library door from my desk, but I'll manage.  We worked on decorating off and on all day.  Pictures forthcoming, when we're done.

We ate at Twin's tonight, splitting a delicious salad.

Now I need to get back to organizing the tubs of Christmas decorations, and maybe decorate a little more.

Sunday, November 28, 2010

When we arrived at church, we discovered there was no heat.  Everyone left their coats on except me.  It bugs me to have my coat on when I'm inside.  Pastor Karen asked us to light the advent wreath.  Keith got the pilot lit on the furnace, and eventually it warmed up.

We went to The Exit in Birch Run for an "X" restaurant, as there are none listed online in the entire state, and none in the phone book either.  So that's as close as we could get.  We were seated in the glassed in area in the front, and that was nice.  Then the waitress brought me a regular Coke, instead of a Diet.  As soon as I mentioned it, she knew what I was going to say, as if she knew all along.  That's beyond irritating!  I ordered "fluffy blueberry pancakes", and they really were fluffy!  I now always ask for sugar-free syrup after realizing what a huge calorie difference it makes.  Usually I'm brought a bottle of Smucker's, but this time it was a generic.  OK, though.  Gary, of course, ordered the buffet and was satisfied with that.

Saturday, November 27, 2010

I went to Target and Penney's today and there were no lines at either place!  I bought a $3.99 dvd at Target.  They were basically sold out of them, but I found one someone at misplaced.  That's all I bought there.  At Penney's, I got Clark some 4T corduroy pants with elastic waists, and they should work well for him.  I got Gracie a top to go with her pj bottoms, but I'm not satisfied with it.  It's "thermal", but thin and not warm.

Watched Intolerable Cruelty with George Clooney, a comedy.  Pretty funny, but as usual, I fell asleep for a short time in the middle of it.

Black Friday, November 26, 2010

It's the day after Thanksgiving and all through my house, it was warm and cozy and quiet without my spouse.  He'd gone shopping at ABC Warehouse.

We were totally out of garbage bags (not good, post-Thanksgiving) and cat food.  So I went to Family Dollar and picked up those two items and nothing else!  Well, nothing else except the York Peppermint Patty.  Then I went to the craft bazaar at Camelot Villa.  Didn't buy anything.  Nothing there that interested me (what does interest me at bazaars anymore?) and a half hour after it started some of the vendors were just arriving!  I was thinking about going to Penney's and Target, but it was cold and blustery, so I drove through McDonald's for my version of comfort food: a hamburger and a Diet Coke.  I realized I could order what I needed from Penny's online at the sale price, so that made life easier, because I could get the sizes I needed without digging through store displays and finding they were sold out.  The site was slow, though.

Did some decorating this afternoon.  Gary bought me Christmas presents and "hid" them on top of the Christmas decoration boxes I was using!  What was he thinking?  Then he was mad that I saw the presents!  Hel-loooooo!  The decoration boxes were open and obviously being used!  Then he put up the tree.  I'll do more tomorrow.  The tree needs to be weighted down to protect it from adventurous cats.

This is how Elmo destroyed our Christmas tree in 2008.  I didn't even realize he was that old.

We ventured out in the bluster to eat at Twin's.  Our punchcard was filled up, so we had a free medium pizza.  Gary added extra cheese to our green peppers and pepperoni.  The punchcard provides for one topping.

Then we came home and I watched some HGTV, which has some good Christmas decorating this year.  Lately, I'd been unsatisfied with it.  Also read a little of my Rick Springfield autobiography.  What Not To Wear was a recap of previous episodes combined together, which means they can call it "New" in the guide, but it really is a rerun.  So naturally I fell asleep.

Thursday, Thanksgiving, November 25, 2010

So much to do today before the family arrived.  Lots of cleaning to do and an 11 lb. turkey, plus a 6 lb. turkey breast, to get ready.  Pretty much everything else had to be prepared at the last minute: the yams and apples, mashed potatoes, rolls.  Not too difficult of a meal to prepare.  There were 11 of us, 6 of them kids.

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

The holidays are growing closer, with Thanksgiving arriving tomorrow.  Therefore, the mood at school/work is becoming more festive while we still remain productive.

I have so much cleaning to get done before company (family) comes tomorrow.

Tonight we ate at Senor Lucky's, and it was nice to relax there for awhile.

Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Today is Granddaughter Elissa's 20th birthday.

I had a dreaded appointment with my evil dentist at 4:00 today.  I got my permanent crown on.  I don't know how any dentist can make that painful.  Actually I do know, he is way too rough, jamming his fingers and instruments into my mouth and gums in a way that no other dentist ever has.  I am now done with him.  So Gary won't be going to him, neither will 6 other members of my family, or two women from church that have had bad experiences with him similar to mine (or their families).

Monday, November 22, 2010

After my bout of throwing up last night, I felt fine and went to school/work today.  After work, we ate at Twin's and split a salad.  Gary also got a hamburger.

Sunday, November 21, 2010

We went to Woodside Church, next to Mott College, today, as Gary knows the female pastor who is leaving there today.  This is a church that celebrates diversity of every kind.  There was a potluck afterwards.  Turkey and a few other main dishes were provided in addition to what parishioners and others brought.

Amanda & the kids came over later.

I woke up when Gary came to bed at about 1:00 a.m.  I went in the bathroom feeling a little strange, and shortly thereafter I threw up lots.  When I was done with that I went to bed and felt fine!  Must've been something I ate at the potluck.

Saturday, November 20, 2010

Saturday, November 20, 2010

Lazed around all morning, then rushed to get ready to go to Penney's before the doorbuster sales ended at 1:00.  Didn't buy any doorbusters, though.  I bought a new living room lamp to go between the recliners.  Now I'll be able to read in there.  I also got a green rug for inside the front door.  I bought exactly what I went for, as usual.  I had a $15 off a $15 or more purchase coupon and used that on those two sale items.

I had my almost daily McDonald's hamburger and Diet Coke on the way.  Hey, I lost 43 lbs. on that diet!

Later, for an early dinner, I had leftover chicken and baked potato salad from Laura.

Tomorrow Gary wants to go to Woodside Church in Flint for the farewell to some pastor friend of his.  There will be what I think is a Thanksgiving dinner after.  Parishioners bring potluck items to go with what is prepared at the church.  Church starts at 10:00, an hour later than ours.

It's bitter cold tonight, severe clear.  It's about 28 degrees, but feels colder.  The moon is full and shining brightly!  WHNN is playing all Christmas carols now, making for pleasant drives to and from my mom's every night.

Friday, November 19, 2010

I spent a long time at work changing the students' EDP passwords, as required by Career Cruising.  I'm probably not even half done.  It's a tedious process, requiring many steps for each student.  I don't mind, though.  That work was broken up by checking out books to elementary students, so that was good.

I looked forward to my belated birthday dinner at Laura's at 4:00.  She served chicken, baked potato salad, baked beans, tossed salad, raw vegetables, chips and dip and chocolate cake.  Her family gave me a soft white throw, a snowman towel, and Cella's chocolate-covered cherries (the ONLY brand to have!).  Amanda's family gave me the Jenny-O turkey burgers, which I requested!
Laura and Gracie

Emmy Bean at 8-1/2 months

For the second week in a row, I fell asleep for the last half of my favorite, What Not To Wear.  I need to tivo it before I fall asleep!

Thursday Night, "W Night, November 18, 2010

W Night took us to Wah Nam for Chinese food.  Wah Nam has been near the corner of Richfield and Genesee Roads in Flint for ages and is well-known by the locals for really good Chinese food and take-out.  I had Almond Boneless Chicken, which comes with soup (mine was chicken rice), an egg roll, and fried rice.

Gary had Singapore Noodles, which are hot and spicy, and come with an egg roll also.  He chooses a side of wonton soup.

We both have plenty of leftovers for tomorrow!

WahNam does a strong take-out business.

At 7:00 I had to be to the school for EDP Parent Night.  It went better than I expected and gives me two more hours' pay, so it's all good.  Then home for Grey's Anatomy.

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

I got the brakes on my car fixed today at Mott Community College for their usual fee of $10 plus parts.  What a deal!  Gary will take his minivan in Monday to have the same thing done.

Then we ate at Senor Lucky's, me having the ala carte shredded chicken burrito with sour cream sauce ($2.99) and Gary having his new favorite, the shredded chicken taco salad, made with no shell.  I forgot to order my burrito without refried beans (to save fat calories).  I carried Gary's leftovers into the house up against my shirt, and it leaked all over me and the carpet (says Stray Black Kitty).  My clothes went straight into the washer.

After eating, we went back to Courtland to pick up Gary's car, and I went into JoAnn Fabrics, looking for a fall-toned candle ring for a hurricane lamp, but didn't find one.  It was fun looking around, though, at all the Christmas decorations, which I don't need and didn't buy.

Then I went to my mom's and Gary went to School Board.  I need to quit buying my occasional McD small caramel frappes.

There's a big uproar going on about Brandy being kicked off Dancing With The Stars and Bristol Palin remaining.

I've watched The Middle (hilarious as usual), and now it's time for Modern Family.

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Different type of evening for us tonight.  Instead of eating soon after I get out of work at 2:35, we had a special dinner to attend at the Clio Masonic Temple.  Dinner consisted of tossed salad with a sweet (Asian?) dressing and nuts, lasagna, fresh green beans (not hot enough), garlic bread.  Good enough, but there should have been salad bowls and dessert plates, instead of just a smallish dinner plate.  Therefore, I could not get dessert when I went through the line,  Later, they did put out those bowls and plates.  Gary got me a tasty rhubarb crunch and put it in a coffee cup.  That worked.

After dinner, there was a very nice program of dulcimer, tin whistle and ukelin performed by the pair who had previously been with Living Truth.

Then Gary received his pin for 40 years in Masonry and a very nice framed certificate, which has an old-timey look making it more special.

Raining pretty hard right now.  I wonder who'll get kicked off Dancing With The Stars?  Tonight, it should be Bristol, but you never know.

Monday, November 15, 2010

Back to work and had a busy and good day.  One of my Facebook high school friends brought me Puppy Chow made by her and a couple friends.  That's the sweet stuff made with chex cereal.  So good!  I learned how to make FB friends clickable in my posts.  That's cool.  Friday I learned how to put a favorites bar at the top of my page when I'm on the internet.  Once you have that, you can't live without it!  Having difficulty putting widgets on my desktop at work, though.  No problem at home.  Maybe because I have XP at school and 7 at home.

We went to Twin's right after school.  We split a chicken strip dinner and still brought most of the chicken home!  Then I ran in WalMart to get Gary shaving cream, but there right in front of me were racks of $1 clothes!  I bought ten things, mostly for Amanda and Doug.

It'll be cold all week, making it easier to figure out what to wear to work.

Today's offer on Seize the Deal was a pair of Flint Symphony tickets to Christmas at Pops for only $16.  Yup, I seized that deal and am so excited about it!  One of those ultimate Christmas experiences!

Tomorrow night we are having dinner at the Clio Masonic Temple as Gary gets some kind of forty-year recognition.

Now I need to go get organized for tomorrow after reading Lorrie's blog from Ireland!

Sunday, November 14, 2010

Well, things seem to be looking up pain-wise.  I continued my steri-pak and only took one Tylenol with codeine before church, to make sure I could made it through the service.  After church, I was talking to two other ladies there, when a fourth asked me how my pain was.  As I was telling her, and relating the short version of the story to the other two, I discovered they had the same dentist and said they had never been treated as roughly and had pain for a long time thereafter.  It looks like we'll all be looking for new dentists!

Lunch was the drive-thru at McDonald's in Otisville and then a short country drive.  Then we came home and Gary conked out after taking a Contac for his impending cold.  He felt better after another nap sitting on the couch, so we headed for the funeral home in Swartz Creek, as a friend from school's stepmother passed away.  We didn't see anyone we knew there.

Afterwards, we headed for Venus (Coney Island?) on Fenton Road, north of Hill.  We hadn't did our "V Week" restaurant yet due to my birthday freebies, so we thought we'd accomplish that for dinner.  I ordered a Slim Jim, and it was better than Big Boy's, bigger, but not too big, with really good ham.  Gary had a broiled fish dinner and I wonder if he found that in the heart-smart section, which they have on the menu, as he was not offered butter or sour cream for his baked potato.  He enjoyed the dinner, which came with a very nice salad bar (baby greens!) and two sides in addition to the mixed veggies on the plate.  He chose the aforementioned potato and a side of spaghetti (very good), both of which he brought home for tomorrow.  Hope that happens, as his traditional fourth meal late at night is not a good thing!

Watched Lawrence Welk with my mom.  No pain so far, and the only Tylenol was this morning before church.  Continuing the steri-pak, of course.

Saturday, November 13, 2010

Over a week and a half ago, I had a dental appointment for a core and crown.  I've had several different dentists over the years, largely because they keep disappearing in Genesee!  Well, I've never had a dentist treat me so roughly as this one!  I told the assistant, after he had began and left the room, that he certainly "barrels right in there", and she rolled her eyes, as if in agreement.  Then I had another couple hours to go!  The whole appointment took 2-1/2 hours, and so I cancelled with my mom, because I was wiped out and expected to feel terrible after I thawed out.  Well, at that time, I didn't actually feel as badly as I expected.

The next day, I felt crummy, and every day thereafter for over a week and a half.  Lots of pain.  The pain would start in my earlobe and travel down along my jawline, twinging like an earache does, but this was not inside my ear.  I kept telling myself it just needed to heal, but it should've healed by now!  So I went to Penney's to do a little Christmas shopping.  I can just as well experience the pain at the mall as I can at home.  Then I ran in Aldi's to stock up on peanut butter and a couple healthy snacks for the grandkids at church tomorrow morning.  Then the pain started getting worse, and I was moaning all the way home.  Ibuprophen was not helping at all now.  I'd also been swishing salt water twice a day since the appointment.  I had to drop off my two pies at church in Clio, so I went on to that after-hours clinic, even though Amanda had to wait there two hours a few weeks ago.  The same happened to me.  The doctor first checked inside my ears to make sure it wasn't an inner-ear infection, and they looked fine, so that was a relief.  Then he checked my mouth, looking for infection, and that wasn't the case, but he said it still was healing.  Like I said, the dentist was rough, and I'm a fast healer.  He said the cause of my severe pain was the actual dental work, the rough treatment and my mouth being forced open for periods longer than necessary.  He gave me a steri-pak and Tylenol with codein.  He said if I thought I needed more, he'd give me a prescription for Vicodin, but I just took the Tylenol.

Then I went on to the roast beef dinner at church.  The meat was delicious, and so was everything else.  I dropped off my prescriptions at VG's on my way to my mother's.  I didn't stay with her long, because I was anxious to get my prescriptions started.  I took my first six pills from the steri-pak and one Tylenol, although you can take two if needed.  I sure hope it works!  Actually, by bedtime I felt less pain.

Friday is finally here!  I like my work, but am always glad for the weekend!  As usual, we ate at Twin's and had pizza with pepperoni and green peppers.

Watched Supernanny and fell asleep halfway through What Not To Wear.

Thursday, November 11, 2010

Happy birthday to me!  Fifty-nine years old!  Facebook birthdays are the best: I must've had 200 greetings!  My co-workers brought me donuts and chocolate milk.  Gary got me a blueberry pie.  I know, weird.  I'm saving it, though, for the roast beef dinner at church Saturday, because I have to bring two pies.  Laura gave me fall-ish flowers in a pretty vase.

We ate at Zehnder's to use my free coupon.  I always liked the Bavarian Inn better, but tonight was very nice.  We had to wait in line and an old friend of Gary's was a bit behind us, so they had a good time reminiscing.  Waiting in line there is the best, because the surroundings are enjoyable to look at and you can also people-watch.  We were seated in a room I'd never been in, and it was very nicely arranged.  Of course, we had family-style chicken and the price is something like $22 now! It seems like a year ago it was $18!  Everything was tasty.  I couldn't decide between a hot fudge or caramel sundae, so the waitress put both on!

All in all, a very nice birthday!

Sunday, November 7, 2010

Today seemed like an unbelievably long day.  Neither bad nor good, just long.

We had church in the morning as usual and delicious snacks thereafter.  Then we drove through the Otisville McDonald's before taking a country drive.  That has to be my favorite after-church activity, preferred to going out to a sit-down breakfast.  I'm not one for going out to breakfast.

When I got home, I started the laundry, but will wait on the final two loads until I get home from my mother's tonight with her laundry.  I do lights, darks and hots.

I took the book I'm reading with me to mom's tonight:  The Wolf Tree by Joseph Heywood.  It's one of his woods cop series, set in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  I read a little while we watched Lawrence Welk and between conversation topics.  Being almost blind, she doesn't notice.

Back to work and routine tomorrow!

Saturday, November 6, 2010

I slept until 9:30 this morning!  I never am able to do that.  I either wake up really early or the phone wakes me up anyway.  I poked around all morning and left for Penney's after noon, needing a new and warmer pair of gloves to match my blue and grey striped scarf.  It would've worked out better if I'd went earlier, but I didn't realize that until it was too late.  I discovered that, in addition to my $10 off a $25 purchase, I had a $10 off a $10 purchase coupon!  If I'd known that, I would've left earlier and used the first coupon before the earlybird sales ended at 1:00.  I didn't have enough time to accumulate $25 worth of purchases.  Oh, well.  Doesn't really matter.  So I did find the ideal pair of grey Isotoner gloves half off, making them $11.99.  Also grabbed a blanket sleeper for Clark for Christmas.

Gary got home about 5:00 with all his freebies from the conference.  Amanda & the kids were here, so we sent most of it home with them:  markers, pens, pads of paper, sewing kits and candy.

Then we ran up to Classic Coney Island for a quick dinner before I went to my mom's.  Gary had prime rib last night and filet mignon today, so all he ordered was a bowl of their delicious chili.  It's probably the best chili I've had.  I had a Greek chicken pita.

Tonight daylight savings time ends, so we "fall back" and gain an hour of sleep.

Friday, November 5, 2010

Gary left this morning for the School Board Conference in Grand Rapids, so I had a quiet evening after work.  I ate at home and then went to my mother's.

Thursday, November 4, 2010

Gary got home at 4 a.m. after driving all night from Wisconsin through the Upper Peninsula.  Near West Branch he encountered a driver coming towards him on the expressway.  Not good.  He called 911.

There weren't any good V restaurants, and I have birthday coupons rolling in online, so we went to Red Robin and will pick up with V later.  We both had our favorites at RR.  I had the Fiesta Fajita Pollo Salad and he had the Bruschetta Burger.

Early tomorrow morning Gary will leave for the annual School Board Conference in Grand Rapids and be home Saturday afternoon.

Wednesday, November 3, 2010

Gary left Manitowac, Wisconsin at 6:00 our time to come home.  He plans to drive all night through the U.P.

Tuesday, November 2, 2010

Gary left this morning for Wisconsin, stopping to see family in Battle Creek on the way.  He's heading for the funeral of Ron's mother in Manitowac.  I didn't want him traveling so far alone, especially with his branch retinal artery occlusion.

I had a dental appointment after work.  The appointment for a core and crown took 2-1/2 hrs. and the dentist was rougher than any I've had. Previously, I'd only been to his office for cleanings.

Feels like November! Elmo the Evil Cat is ready.

This is my new sidewalk salt box for the front porch. I got it from LTD.  It had to be assembled!

Saturday, October 30, 2010

Had a nice fall Saturday.  High temps were in the 50's.  Last night, I heard the garbage can lid crash from the can containing my black oiler sunflower seed for the birds.  I knew right away it was a raccoon.  I shone the big flashlight on him, and he didn't like that and took off.  The lid had a cement brick on it, but that was no problem for him.  It was the biggest coon I've ever seen!  I usually don't worry about being around the coons, but I wasn't going out with this one!  Gary replaced the lid and put a cement block on it, so now neither the coon nor I can get into the bird seed!  A couple nights earlier, Gary was letting Elmo the Cat out for the night.  He opened the front door and stopped Elmo just in time from meeting up with two smaller coons on the front porch!

I drove through Halo Burger on Richfield Road this morning, because I wanted to get Halloween coupons for Junior Shakes for the grandkids, 10 coupons for $1.  Unfortunately, they were sold out.  Then I went on to WalMart to pick up a few things.  Madilyn wanted me to come over, so I made Ghost Cookies for the kids and for church tomorrow.  You dip Nutter Butters into melted white chocolate almost all the way to look like ghosts.  Add chocolate chips for the eyes and you're done!

When Gary got home, we ate at Tom's (now called Classic Coney Island, but we, and others, will always call it Tom's).  He had the pork chop dinner, which he often gets.  He had it with cole slaw and a baked potato.  I had the Greek Chicken Wrap.

Then on to Mom's and Lawrence Welk.  Maybe now we'll watch a movie.

Friday, October 29, 2010

Today marks the fifth day I haven't eaten sweet snacks (with the exception of 90 calorie granola bars).  I lost 4 pounds, which I think makes no sense.  Of course, last night's meal at Uno was quite low-calorie.

Tonight, though, we ordered a medium pizza at Twin's.  At least those are thin crust.  I was relieved that Bridget didn't bring us desserts she had bought us at Meijer's.  Two weeks ago, she brought us a huge slice of a divine carrot cake and another slice, which was chocolate.  Last week she brought the carrot cake again and a container of raw vegetables with dip.  So tonight we were thankful (at least I was) that she didn't appear to have any desserts forthcoming.  BUT then Jennifer approached with one of those amazing desserts she makes for us there.  This one was a slice of cheesecake topped with blueberry pie filling, chocolate syrup, whip cream and two Oreos!  We're going to have to speak to them about this!

Genesee's playoff game was tonight against Rochester Hills Lutheran.  We won 54-0.  I was concerned the guys hearts wouldn't be in it due to the death this week of the mom of one of the cheerleaders.  Her boyfriend plays on the team.

I picked up my soap that Lynn had left at my mom's for me.  Lynn makes soap and other natural products.  Several bars of the soap were my favorite:  pumpkin brulee!

New season of What Not To Wear begins tonight with a makeover of Mindy Cohn, who was Jo on the Facts of Life.

Thursday Night, "U Night", October 28, 2010

I'd been looking forward to U Night,  because we planned to eat at Uno's in Birch Run.  I had an email coupon from their website for a free entree.  Gary got the beef tips he loves, with a side salad, a side of mashed cauliflower and twice-baked potatoes.  I got the spinach, eggplant, feta pizza.  There was a choice of thin crust or five-grain crust, but I didn't specify because I never did before and I always loved it.  I should have specified because they gave me thin crust and the five-grain is what makes it a sensational pizza.

We had a meeting at school at 7 a.m. in regards to the death last night of our much-loved bus driver, Angie.  Counseling was available for students all day long at any time.  Angie's daughter is a senior at our school.  There are 3 older boys.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Tonight at 5:00 was our annual Pastor Appreciation Dinner, and the first one for us with Pastor Karen, her husband, Lawrence, and her daughter, Beth.  The dinner was delicious and was a planned potluck.  Gary had a special School Board meeting at 7:00, just a short one.  While there, he found out that one of our bus drivers, Angie Stanton, was killed along with her husband in a car accident at 6:00.  One of the two passengers in the other car was also killed. Angie has four children and the 23 year old mom in the other car has six.  It was the night of that mom's 3 year old's birthday.

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

I didn't work with any kids at school today, but was very busy nevertheless.  It began raining after lunch, sometimes very hard, and kept on for hours.

Gary didn't get home until long after me, and I didn't know where he was.  Turned out he went to a meeting at church that I didn't know about.  I changed into a warm sweater, because I just couldn't shake the rainy day chill.  We ate at Classic Coney Island (Tom's), and I had a chicken melt pita with coleslaw and he had a hot meatloaf sandwich with chicken gravy.  Weird, I know!

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Another beautiful fall day!  Had a really good meal at Arby's tonight.  I had the Turkey, Bacon & Swiss Toasted Sub and Gary had the Philly steak one.  The cashier (manager) talked me into one of the new chocolate turnovers, which didn't look that sensational to me, but it was very good!

I spent hours on the computer tonight uploading my fall up north pictures from the Keweenaw area to pastycam. I had a lot of difficulty, so I emailed Mary Drew, and she wrote right back!  She said don't try to do the allowed five at once, only do two, and that worked.  Two at a time is tedious, but it did work.

Saturday, October 9, 2010

Last night I must have slept 10 hours!  I don't know how I managed that!

Today was a very pleasant, fall day with warm temperatures.  Gary had my car all morning and half the afternoon, so I stayed home.  I updated this blog, worked on cleaning my desk, cleaned the bathroom sink, etc.  Then Amanda & the kids came over.

We haven't seen Stray Black Kitty since last night.

Watched Date Night.  Of course, I fell asleep and will have to rewatch the end tomorrow.

Now the tornado siren is going off.  It just ended.  I wonder what that was all about?

Friday, October 8, 2010

After my day at work, we ate at Twin's, having the Greek grinder.  So good!

Genesee won another game, not a surprise.

Thursday Night, "R Night", October 7, 2010

Tonight we enjoyed our dinner at Red Robin, always a favorite.  I had the new Mediterranean Chicken Salad. It is only $6.99 until November 7, so that was a deal!  The salad was large and made up of romaine lettuce with lemon dill ranch dressing.  It was topped with an oregano-grilled chicken breast. It was tasty, but there were not enough Feta or diced tomatoes.  The salad also contained cucumber and black olives.  Next time I would order my usual Pollo Fiesta Salad.  Gary had his favorite Bruschetta Burger with bottomless fries.  The pop there is $2.50, too pricey for something that is a negligible cost for the restaurant.

We are continuing to have wonderful Indian Summer weather, seventies every day.

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Monthly church potluck at 5:00.  I took pasties from up north.  We brought home a cooler full of frozen ones.  There were a lot of people there that have never came before.  Strange.  It was Pastor Karen's b'day.

Still here.

Back to work.

Sunday, October 3, 2010

We are on our way home from a glorious fall vacation! Here are some pictures that I've forgotten to post.  The first will be of Powerhouse Falls on the Falls River in L'anse.

Saturday, October 2, 2010

Today we are sticking closer to the cabin, on our peninsula, as we will be going to the Stew Supper at the Aura Township Hall at 5:30.

First, we went out to Pte. Abbaye, the tip of our peninsula. Our peninsula is smallish, but the drive out curvy, sometimes rutted, roads slows us down. It's a beautiful drive, though! We parked in the parking area out there. The waves were high, so it was safer to walk the interior trail out to the point, rather than walking the treacherous rocks along the cliffs of the Big Lake.  While on that trail, you could throw a rock to your left or right and land it in the lake if you were a strong thrower and the trees weren't in the way!  We saw a fresh bear track in the mud, so I kept my eyes open for bear and moose (actually hoping I would see one or the other!).

This is where we ended up, with the Huron Mountains on the horizon across Huron Bay. BUT . . . just to the left were big, crazy waves! I didn't like Gary walking along there, thinking he might slip and be lost to the Lake forever.  So how come I was following behind him?  Lake Superior beckons, and you have to come!

This is just before I let out a shriek as a big wave came up on the shore behind me! I know the water is deep here, and I meant to ask a friend how deep it is, but forgot to.

I am really enjoying these new knees!

Today we also went to Silver River Falls, my favorite.  You park and walk along, descending along the falls.  So beautiful, and it smells wonderfully like cedar!  This is where I always bore my kids by reminding them that we are walking in the same steps as the Indians did (and do).

Sportin' the Kromer at Silver River Falls.

We had such a good time at the Stew Supper in Aura!  It is a thank you dinner for all the volunteers at July's Aura Jamboree.  The stew was delicious and, being a Yooper stew, it contains rutabatga.  It was served with assorted breads and homemade pie.

Friday, October 1, 2010

Today we are heading for the Porcupine Mountains, the Porkies.  Colors are always fabulous along the way on Highway 38, and this fall is no different.  Then we turn and head towards the mountains along Lake Superior's shore. It always looks cold and wintry there from inside the car.  There are some newer and nice-looking businesses along there, including an AmericInn, or whatever it is called.  We were going to enter the state park and head up to the Lake of the Clouds overlook, but decided not to.  Starting today there is a new fee schedule. Since Gary, as the driver of the car, has a July birthday, we would pay $10 for a pass that would be good until next July. We would never use it again in that space of time, so we decided against it.  I had been expecting a senior citizen's day pass of about $2 or so!

We took Pike River Road home. That is just south of Twin Lakes State Park. There are several lakes along the way, some with just fishing sites and others with campgrounds.  It is always a pretty area in the fall.

Below are some other shots I should've displayed here.

These two pictures are just before the Porkies State Park entrance.

Thursday, September 30, 2010

Today was our Keweenaw Day, and a beautiful day it was. Temps are warm, just like in Flint, in the seventies, but dropping every day for the rest of our vacation.  That's OK with me, it's more fall-like.  We stopped and visited with Tracey at the Visitors' Center.  We were kind of behind schedule due to calls from home.  After taking these three pictures (and more) at Ten Foot, we headed up Brockway.

We got to our favorite restaurant ever, the Harbor Haus on the shore of Lake Superior in Copper Harbor, at about 4:00. My meal began with a perfect tossed salad with bleu cheese dressing and freshly-cracked pepper. Hard rolls are also served with olive oil and herbs for dipping. I had my usual beef rouladen with red cabbage and German potato salad.  Gary ordered planked whitefish.  We both had lightly seasoned and buttered vegetables, and they are the best anywhere!

This is out the second floor window of the Harbor Haus. You can see the lighthouse
